HONOR OUR HEROES, CELEBRATE SAFELY THIS MEMORIAL DAY WEEKEND
As we head into Memorial Day Weekend, often considered the unofficial start of summer, the North Lake Tahoe Fire Protection District encourages our community and visitors to take a moment to remember the true meaning of the holiday—honoring the brave men and women of our military who made the ultimate sacrifice.
While we gather with family and friends, please make safety a priority. Whether you're hiking, grilling, or enjoying the lake, a little preparation goes a long way in ensuring a safe and enjoyable weekend for all.
Outdoor Recreation Safety
- Hiking, Biking & Trails: Check current trail conditions and maps through the Tahoe Rim Trail Association. Be mindful of changing weather and remaining snow at higher elevations.
- Camping & Forest Access: Many National Forest beaches and campgrounds open in mid-May, but some remote areas may remain closed. Visit the USFS Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit for current recreation updates.
- Dress in Layers: Lake Tahoe’s weather can change quickly. Be prepared with clothing suitable for both warm afternoons and chilly evenings.
Water Safety on Lake Tahoe
Lake Tahoe’s water remains cold year-round and can be dangerous, even on warm days. Please follow these guidelines:
- Know Before You Go – Check the forecast and lake conditions.
- Plan & Prepare – Always wear a U.S. Coast Guard-approved life jacket and bring safety gear.
- Respect the Water – Obey posted signs and always let someone know your plans.
- Emergency Response – If someone is in trouble: Reach, Throw, Don’t Go. If you are in distress: Flip, Float, Relax. Always call 911 immediately.
Leave No Trace
Please recreate responsibly and help preserve the beauty of Lake Tahoe for everyone. Pack out what you pack in, and respect wildlife and natural habitats.
Grilling Safety & Fire Restrictions
All recreational fires and gas fire pits require a NLTFPD Operational Burn Permit. All open burning or pile burning is not permissible (closed on May 1, 2025).
Gas or charcoal BBQ’s are permissible without a permit. Please visit https://nltfpd.org/outdoor-burning for more information.
General Grilling Tips
- Always grill outdoors, away from homes, deck railings, eaves, and overhanging branches.
- Keep children and pets at least three feet from the grill area.
- Never leave a lit grill unattended.
- Clean your grill regularly to remove grease and fat buildup.
- Always open the lid before lighting your gas grill.
Charcoal Grills
- Do not use charcoal grills on combustible surfaces.
- Only use charcoal starter fluid—never gasoline or other flammable liquids.
- Let coals cool completely before disposing in a metal container.
- Residents with wood-burning appliances can apply for a free ash can at the Fire District Administration Office, 866 Oriole Way, Incline Village.
Propane Grills
- Test the hose for leaks with a soap and water solution. Bubbles indicate a leak.
- If you smell gas or detect a leak, turn off the grill and gas. Call the Fire District if the leak continues.
- If a flame goes out, turn everything off and wait at least 15 minutes before re-lighting.
Let’s honor our heroes by celebrating safely and respectfully this Memorial Day Weekend. For more safety information or to apply for an ash can, please visit www.nltfpd.org or contact our office at (775) 831-0351.
